There is an idea of "switching" in 12-Step. IE: I gave up drinking, I want to smoke out. The reason for this is that whatever trauma in underneath your addictive behavior is probably still there. When we give up one addiction, there's always another. I don't recommend going into trauma recover care of Co-dependency without some serous support and structure, like a treatment center or a therapist who really understands co-dependancy.
