A reader’s question

I’ve written a children’s picture book. What are the best steps for finding an illustrator. Do I hire one, or go through a publisher — that I do not have yet?

Alle’s favorite for young children: outstanding words and illustrations to nurture spiritual development

Alle sez:

Great question. In most cases, well-established publishers have illustrators they prefer to work with. If you have the skills and the desire to do the illustration for your book, when a house makes an offer, bring it up and have it written into the contract.

Alternatively, you could mention in one line at the bottom of the query that you can provide illustrations, should they be interested. Do not submit samples.

The good news here is: you get to focus on the writing!
